New Nintendo-Scene Tutorials

A few new tutorials have been created on the forum lately. Quite a few of these can only be found on our forums.

  • How to backup Wii/GCN ISOs over Wifi
  • How to disassemble and customize a Wii Wheel
  • For more information on creating Wii backups the standard way, the Creating Wii and Gamecube Backups tutorial is still a good read. A Backup Wii Games to SD card tutorial has also been made by tom35, though it requires an SD Gecko.

Tom has also compiled a list of sicknasty413’s Wiimote and Nunchuk LED modifications into a single thread, which is a good place to start when researching those types of mods. Other Wii modification tutorials can be found in either the Wii Case/Hardware Mods section, or in its child forum known as Wii Remote Hacking.

Code Released to Backup Wii’s Private Keys

Bushing has released code to backup your Wii’s private keys.

This isn’t the prettiest code I’ve ever written — it doesn’t have much of an interface, and I just threw this release together in a few minutes. However, it’s been exceedingly useful to me, and hopefully some of you will find it useful, too. I’ll quote the README here:

This program will do the following, automatically:

  • Download IOS11 from the Nintendo Update Server
  • Patch it to remove the MEM2 protection (so the PPC can access all 64MB of it)
  • Patch it to allow it to delete itself later using ES_DeleteTitle()
  • Find an unused IOS slot (counting downward from IOS255)
  • Install the hacked IOS11 there
  • Reboot into the hacked IOS
  • Copy the private key structure from the IOS address space into MEM1
  • Reboot back into a sane IOS
  • Delete the temporary, hacked IOS
  • Display the keys on screen
  • Try to write them to a file on the SD card — keys.txt
  • Pause for 60 seconds to allow you to copy the keys down using pen and paper, if necessary
  • I wrote this a week or two after I killed a Wii trying to reproduce tmbinc’s original Tweezer Hack. May it rest in peace.

The first version of this code just used a patched version of IOS, which was an ugly hack. It’s still an ugly hack, but at least it no longer contains copyrighted code. You should only really need to run it once on any given Wii, but it should be safe to run as much as you want. If nothing else, it demonstrates the kinds of ways you can use PatchMii_core to do something useful (as opposed to just running it and then packaging the result up as cIOS).

    Do Not Install - D2Pro Update 2.1

    Source: D2pro.com
D2Pro has received reports of their 2.1 Firmware Update causing issues with some D2Pro chips.
They are recommending not upgrading until a future firmware is released due to the fact that the d2c2 compatible D2Pros cannot be backleveled.

Issues with new v2.1 firmware on d2c chipsets - 2008.07.18
We have received reports that there are some issues with the new v2.1 firmware for people using d2pro with D2C chipsets. We are investigating this and will release a fix soon. In the meantime, please note that d2pros with the green “d2c-2 compliant” sticker on them cannot be downgraded to v1.0 or v1.1b firmware. Therefore, do not use the v2.1 update if you have a standard D2C chipset and a d2c-2 compliant d2pro. If you have already updated, don’t worry! The upcoming fix will work for you!

Possible Wii Softmod Discovered - Will NOT be Public

    Source Hackmii
Bushing and gang have discovered a security flaw that could allow backups to be played on the Wii without a modchip.
Bushing is looking to have Nintendo’s engineers patch this security flaw before it is discovered by someone else and made public.

    Dear Nintendo,
July 17th, 2008 by bushing · No Comments
As part of our efforts to understand how the Wii works, we believe we
have found a security issue that could allow pirated Wii games to be
played on an unmodified Wii console.

I would like to speak to an engineer about this — please have one contact me at bushing (at) gmail.com.

    Sincerely,
    bushing

P.S. Sorry for posting this publicly — I tried emailing you three times
and never received a response. I am trying to follow the model set forth
in http://www.wiretrip.net/rfp/policy.html, so your timely response
    would be appreciated.

    WiiMU - Channel Launcher

SquidMan has released WiiMU, a Wii homebrew application which lists all of the installed channels on your Wii, and then allows you to launch them.

    From the release notes:

WiiMU is a PoC “Channel Launcher” app for the Wii. It eventually aims to completely replace the System Menu in functionality. At the moment it is quite far from that goal, but it does have a start. It currently:

  • Lists all installed Channels. (Does not include those with only a ticket)
  • Allows selection of the Channel to load.
  • Allows return to loader.
  • Allows return to real System Menu.
  • Please note that at the moment it DOES NOT REPLACE ANY SYSTEM FILES! It may eventually get to that point, but currently it is far from it.

D2Pro Firmware v2.1 Update Released - Eject Issue Fixed!

NS Member nvdolfan has informed us that D2Pro has announced that they have released a new firmware to fix the Eject Issue.

Firmware Update Released - Eject Issue Fixed! - 2008.07.15
People who have been experiencing eject issues with their d2pro chips will be pleased to hear that this bug has now been fixed! The official 2.0 update (d2prog required) has been released and is available for download in the resources section along with new config discs. This updates works on all d2pro versions up to with the SPI Flash (upto d2c-2) and will even add d2c-2 compatibility to earlier versions of d2pro!

Mistake with new firmware version number - 2008.07.16
The more observant of you may have noticed that the version number of the new firmware has been increased from 2.0 to 2.1. This was mearly a mistake in the original naming of the file. It was supposed to be 2.1 — no changes have been made to the firmware itself, so there is no reason to re-download or re-flash your chip if you already downloaded ‘2.0′ yesterday. Sorry for the confusion!

    Downloads:
    v2.1 Firmware
    Linux i386 - gzip tarball - 537KiB
    Mac OS X - gzip tarball - 539KiB
Windows XP - gzip tarball - 538KiB (driver also required — do not let Windows automatically search for a driver for d2prog!)

    Thanks again to nvdolfan!!!
