As promised, WiiGator has released his first build of his GameCube Backup Launcher. He admits to a few bugs being still present, but since the source code is released as well, anyone make make changes to the program.
To use the launcher, first run the included MIOS patcher, which will modify your Wii’s GameCube IOS for use with the loader. Then run the Launcher itself.
From the release notes:
What it does
You can start GameCube backups on Wii. There is no hardware change required. This is only software.
There is only DVD-R directly supported. DVD+R need to be patched to booktype DVD-ROM.
Installation Guide:
Copy directories “miospatcher” and “rungcbackup” to your SD card into the “apps” directory.
If you don’t have a internet connnection with your Wii. You need to copy only one MIOS version to the SD card.
Put SD card into the front slot of your Wii.
Start Homebrew Channel
Run MIOS Patcher and press A (GC controller).
Insert your GameCube disc.
Run GC Backup Launcher and press A to start game (GC controller).
Note: If you want to start a game from the Wii disc channel, you need to enable support for Wii Backup Launcher by pressing in step 5. You can use rebooter from the Wii Backup Launcher to test it.
Compatibility:
Some games are not working.
How it works:
MIOS is patched to allow starting of homebrew. It is also patched to leave DVD-R support enabled.
The rungcbackup.dol copies the gcbackuplauncher to memory and changes to GameCube mode.
gcbackuplauncher patches the DVD read functions, so reading is possible.
System requirements:
IOS249 with backup support need to be installed (e.g. my cIOS r7 from backuplauncher 0.3 gamma).
Additional Information:
If installation fails with error -1017. It will try to delete MIOS and install it after (files are already downloaded at this point). Deletion will only work with a custom IOS249. So if you get error -1017, you need to install IOS249.
Offline Installation:
If your Wii don’t have a internet connection, you can copy the required files on a SD card.
Only one MIOS version is required. All versions are working.

The translation for the Japanese copy of Mother 3, the sequel for Earthbound, has been completed.
From the release page:
After more than 13 years of waiting, the sequel to EarthBound is now in English! I hope fans of the series, new and old, will find MOTHER 3 to be just as unique and interesting as its predecessors. We tried our very best to make a worthy translation, and I think we came close to hitting that mark. With any luck, the translation will seem just as “strange, funny, and heartrending” as the original Japanese version.
MOTHER 3 is filled with secrets and rarities. Characters say new things after even the tiniest of events. Take your time to explore the game’s intriguing world - you won’t be disappointed! And when you’re done, be sure to come back here, because we’ve prepared many more goodies for fans to check out and enjoy post-game!
Enjoy your time in the world of MOTHER 3!

Pagetable is reporting that The Legend of Zelda - Link‚Äôs Awakening DX for the GB/GBC (as well as other games) has source code included and unencrypted. Apparently, the games needed to be 2MB in size, and if they weren’t big enough, padding with files already on hand was easy enough to do. So, if the files included information included in the RAM at the time, you get a nice chunk of the source code.
Imagine you’re writing a Game Boy game, and the resulting ROM with all the code and data is just a little over one megabyte in size. No big deal, just pad the game to two megabytes, and use a 2 MB ROM in the cartridge. Just tell the linker to allocate 2 MB or RAM, put the actual data at the beginning, and then write a 2 MB “.gb” image to disk, which will then be sent to the ROM chip factory.
Now imagine you’re doing this in MS-DOS. Your linker, probably written in C, calls malloc() of the runtime library of the C compiler. You already know where this is going?
While modern operating systems will always clear all malloc()ed memory, so that you cannot get to other processes’ data, this was uncommon in the single-user MS-DOS days. If you allocate 2 MB of RAM (the linker must have used a DOS extender or XMS), you’d get memory with random data in it: leftovers from whatever was in this memory before. (seppel tells me that this can also be caused by seek()ing over EOF in MS-DOS, in which case the previous data on the hard disk will be in the image.)

Rudolph has updated his 3-in-1 Tool to version 1.9a. Support has been added for the SuperCard ONE soft-reset feature. You can read the changelog, but please note it is a translation from Japanese.
After so long a time, SCDS (ONE) with it tried making software reset.
When in the past and AK+ with those which have been tested were diverted that way, Nantes it moved.
So, with ナゼ AK+ it probably is not to move?
Promptly, it tried installing in 3in1_Tool.
A little, just, there is also bug correction, but SCDS (ONE) errand other than that way
At all it is OK.
PS:
Again, from 305 the present. . . What and this time AceKard R.P.G is included in.
Word of appreciation sees truly and does not drive. Thank you.
