Bushing Comments on Nintedo Wii Warranty Regarding Modified Wii’s

From Hackmii

I’ve been asked whether installing the Homebrew Channel (or Twilight Hack or whatever) will void the warranty on a Wii. I’ve generally said something like “Technically, yes, but I doubt they will enforce that.” This seemed reasonable, given some of the anecdotes I’ve heard — stories of people ruining their drives with a soldering iron and still getting free repair work done under warranty, etc. I’ve also said that if a Wii is bricked (and won’t boot), then they have no way of actually checking to see what is installed on the Wii — and I still believe that to be true, at least most of the time.

I’ll be the first to admit that was wrong, given some recent evidence:
Warranty Invoice

My German’s pretty bad, but I see “…. Softwarehack … EUR 210″. That seems awfully excessive, given that the price of a new Wii is EUR 250, no?

I would write this off as an isolated incident — maybe someone installed some truly awful warezloading hack. However, I was sent the following email through an anonymous remailer last month, and it would seem to support the invoice above:

NES PC - Old School Nintendo Mod

HousePlant has put his NES PC console mod in the B/S/T forums. It is a miniature Windows XP computer put in a NES console case, and supports emulating several classic consoles. Several control inputs are available, such as using your original NES controllers, or syncing Wiimotes via Bluetooth.

YouTube Preview Image

From the forums:

I’m selling my NES PC. It’s a fully functional Windows XP computer built into the shell of an original 1980’s NES.

It can emulate near perfection:

Atari
Turbografx 16
Gameboy
Gameboy Advance
NES
SNES
Nintendo 64
Sega Master System
Sega Genesis
Sega CD
Sega 32x
Sega Gamegear
Neo Geo
Most Arcade Machines
Playstation 1

You can plug in NES controllers and use them with any game, sync a wiimote(or 15) and use it as a gamepad or pointer mouse along with all the accessories (guitar hero guitar, nunchuck, classic controller, etc…) all very easily. Or just use the good old fashioned keyboard and mouse combo.

It can be hooked up to any TV or Monitor through either D-sub, S-video, or RCA.
The power led, power button, and reset button all work just as they should.

For more information regarding the NES PC, check out the B/S/T forums!

New Wii’s Have Epoxy on The Drive Chip to Prevent Modding

Tehskeen is reporting that new Wii’s will be shipping out with epoxy covering the drivechip pins to prevent people from modifying the Wii. It is unclear wether or not the alternate install points on the bottom of the board are also covered but from the initial post reading it does not seem to be.
This will however effect any user that wants to use a Wii-Clip in any new system.

Wii with Epoxy

It seems that Nintendo is following Microsoft’s lead and is now covering all new Nintendo Wii DVD-ROM IC chips with some rock solid epoxy on them. This epoxy will prevent most end users from installing a modifcation chip and will leave installations up to the professional installers. Good business for them, bad news for the average joe.

New Nintendo-Scene Tutorials

A few new tutorials have been created on the forum lately. Quite a few of these can only be found on our forums.

  • How to backup Wii/GCN ISOs over Wifi
  • How to disassemble and customize a Wii Wheel
  • For more information on creating Wii backups the standard way, the Creating Wii and Gamecube Backups tutorial is still a good read. A Backup Wii Games to SD card tutorial has also been made by tom35, though it requires an SD Gecko.

Tom has also compiled a list of sicknasty413’s Wiimote and Nunchuk LED modifications into a single thread, which is a good place to start when researching those types of mods. Other Wii modification tutorials can be found in either the Wii Case/Hardware Mods section, or in its child forum known as Wii Remote Hacking.
