DSi System Menu - 1.4

Nintendo has released one of their first major updates to the Nintendo DSi handheld. While claiming Facebook integration and faster camera response as features, they’ve notably left out that all current flashcart models are blocked.

If you have purchased a flashcart for the DSi which did not come with a firmware updater, you are highly advised to avoid this update. Updating with a cart like this will render it useless to you indefinitely. If you do have a flashcart with updating capabilities (that is, a hardware update, not simply a software one) you can decide for yourself whether or not you trust your flashcart’s company to update the device.

Firmware 1.4 is currently out in Japan, Europe, and Australia. A North American release is likely very soon.

Wii System Menu 4.1 Released for Europe and USA

News article from Tehskeen:

Version 4.1 of the System Menu for the Nintendo Wii was built on June 24th, 2009 and released on July 3rd, 2009 in Japan, and released in America and Europe on July 15th, 2009.
Apparrently, there is a bugfix whereby if a VC/WiiWare game is played from SD, and then Wii Sports Resort is played, it forces you to watch the motionplus tutorial, although it was meant to be only watched once, on the first run.
Wiimpersonator log

Nothing has been broken with this update, bannerbomb works fine, using the hackmii installer to install the likes of the HBC is fine, so no need to worry.

No Next Gen Consoles Untill 2013, Maybe HD Wii in 2010

From vgt247, here is a brief synopsis of Michael Pachter’s view of the future for current and next generation consoles.

In a recent industry newsletter he sent to our in-boxes, Pachter reiterated what he told us at GDC that this current console generation is that last, and if not - it’s going to be a while.

“We do not expect a “new” console in 2010 (other than the long-rumored high definition Wii, which is likely to upgrade the Wii to current console technology),” he wrote. “We do not expect the ‘next’ generation to begin before 2013, if at all.”

“We remain convinced that the publishers will resist the introduction of any video game hardware technology that requires a refresh of software, as the publishers have as yet to capitalize on the immense investments made in being competitive in the current cycle.”

The end of Softmods?

A number of people are reporting that new Wii consoles are not allowing them to install Softmod packages. Team Twiizers has confirmed that these consoles contain a new version of boot1, and won’t work with any current softmod method.

It is discussed in the Hackmii article located here

When the article was written, it was speculated that 10% of Wiis had the new boot1. It would appear more and more Wiis are being released with this new boot1.

Soldered and Solderless modchips as well as most homebrew seem unaffected at the moment. Seems Nintendo has finally clued into the Softmod scene and are beginning take active measures to combat it.

We here at Nintendo-Scene will keep you updated as more information is comes out.

Wii Firmware Update v3.4

Nintendo has released a new Firmware Update for the Wii.
It is highly recommended that you do not update the firmware prior to knowing the effects.

Information from WiiBrew:

23 October 08: Nintendo has (finally) released an update which blocks fakesigning on all IOSes. As usual, updating is not recommended until further details and implications regarding homebrew are examined.

New Information posted at Tehskeen:

Wii Firmware Update v3.4 - Blocks Hombrew Channel & More

Dydjnamite23 has posted some solid information regarding the recently released Nintendo Wii Firmware Update (v3.4). Here’s the info …

A. Does it affect WADs?
- If you had the most recent cIOS, I believe that WAD Manager 1.21 STILL works (it does for some i believe…), Unsure though!!

B. Does it affect HBC?
- If you had yours already installed, it doesn’t, but it seems to block new installations of it.

C. Does it affect Already installed games?
- In no way this upgrade affects anything already installed, unless it is something that must use a IOS, because they have been patched.

D. Can you downgrade and have the Shop Channel working?
- I think you can’t downgrade for the time being, so nobody can test if you can enter the WSChannel after downgrading.

Nintendo Wii Back Up Disc 1.31 “Pink Fish” In the Wild

The rumored disc “pink fish” or “kissing fish” is now rumored to be out in the wild. There is not a lot you can do with this disc that cannot be done with homebrew, and you also run the risk of bricking your Wii.

Save Wii Games Direct To SD (Coming Spring 2009)

Kotaku is reporting that, starting in the Spring of 2009, the Wii will have the capability to save games to the SD card.

Finally. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has just announced that, beginning in Spring 2009 (at least for Japan), Nintendo Wii owners will be able to download software directly to an SD card. “We have to address the console’s insufficient memory storage,” said Iwata, speaking at today’s Nintendo Fall Press Conference. This obviously applies only to WiiWare and Virtual Console games, but hey, since they were the things clogging up your memory in the first place, it’s hard to see this as anything other than good news. Not perfect news, but still, better than silence.
