Over at HackMii, the developers of BootMii are collecting information on the various versions of boot1 (a low level Wii firmware file) so that a widely compatible final product can be created. All they ask is for anyone with homebrew installed to run the BootMii Checker, which retrieves the hash and versions of critical firmware modules and sends the information over wifi for analysis.
From HackMii:
We haven’t made an update on BootMii for a while but never fear, things are progressing. Part of what takes so long is figuring out what the edge cases are that could cause things to fail and in this regard we need your help!
We’ve developed a BootMii Compatibility Checker that we need as many people as possible to run on their Wii. This little utility will check your boot1 against a list of known versions and tell us if you have one that we haven’t seen. We’ve recently seen a few boot1 versions floating around that break BootMii so with your help we’re compiling a list of safe boot1’s to use in our installer so that you get a better quality BootMii.
Update: Checker will not work on Wiis running v3.4 of the System Menu. Don’t worry, BootMii will run just fine on v3.4 when it’s released.
Update: Marcan asked me to remind you that by running Checker you’re consenting to Checker sending your data about your Wii to us. Checker tells you about this when you run it, but apparently my WiFi sucks and takes longer to init than most people’s so you may not have time to read it all before it sends the info (we should have added an explicit delay there).
Update: Just to clarify Checker does not install anything on your Wii, it just collects your ConsoleID (this is used in exported save games), boot1 hash, boot2 version, region, video mode and the IOS version it’s running under and sends it back to us over Wifi. It does not peek at anything you may have installed on your Wii so you can put those tinfoil hats away now.

As promised, WiiGator has released his first build of his GameCube Backup Launcher. He admits to a few bugs being still present, but since the source code is released as well, anyone make make changes to the program.
To use the launcher, first run the included MIOS patcher, which will modify your Wii’s GameCube IOS for use with the loader. Then run the Launcher itself.
From the release notes:
What it does
You can start GameCube backups on Wii. There is no hardware change required. This is only software.
There is only DVD-R directly supported. DVD+R need to be patched to booktype DVD-ROM.
Installation Guide:
Copy directories “miospatcher” and “rungcbackup” to your SD card into the “apps” directory.
If you don’t have a internet connnection with your Wii. You need to copy only one MIOS version to the SD card.
Put SD card into the front slot of your Wii.
Start Homebrew Channel
Run MIOS Patcher and press A (GC controller).
Insert your GameCube disc.
Run GC Backup Launcher and press A to start game (GC controller).
Note: If you want to start a game from the Wii disc channel, you need to enable support for Wii Backup Launcher by pressing in step 5. You can use rebooter from the Wii Backup Launcher to test it.
Compatibility:
Some games are not working.
How it works:
MIOS is patched to allow starting of homebrew. It is also patched to leave DVD-R support enabled.
The rungcbackup.dol copies the gcbackuplauncher to memory and changes to GameCube mode.
gcbackuplauncher patches the DVD read functions, so reading is possible.
System requirements:
IOS249 with backup support need to be installed (e.g. my cIOS r7 from backuplauncher 0.3 gamma).
Additional Information:
If installation fails with error -1017. It will try to delete MIOS and install it after (files are already downloaded at this point). Deletion will only work with a custom IOS249. So if you get error -1017, you need to install IOS249.
Offline Installation:
If your Wii don’t have a internet connection, you can copy the required files on a SD card.
Only one MIOS version is required. All versions are working.

WiiGator, the author of an open source Wii backup loader, has been working on a GameCube loader as well. One of his beta testers has uploaded a video showing a beta build of the loader. Compatibility is looking pretty good, though the disc speed is limited to 3x, as it is for Wii backups.

Watch the Preview on YouTube.
From WiiGator’s Blog Post:
The last days I was working on a loader for GC backups. This is only a preview. The release will be within the next week.
A tester made a video showing it in action. Sorry for the bad quality.

Here are some notes:
I tested it with the games I have. All games seem to be fully working. There may be games which are not working.
IOS249 with backup support need to be installed (e.g. my cIOS r7 from backuplauncher 0.3 gamma).
DVD speed is still limited to 3x.
There are sometimes problems with the DVD read speed. So there is sometimes a very short delay in a few games. The game play is only barely influenced. This was only the case for one of my games.
If you eject the disc, no disc can be detected after it. For 2 disc games use the second disc to boot, if you need to change the disc.
You will need to copy MIOS files to a SD card if you don’t have a internet connection (either Version 5 or Version 6, both is working). There are problems with the Nintendo servers in the last time. You may not be able to download it.
